A Carotid Duplex Scan uses ultrasound to evaluate the main arteries in the neck that takes blood to the brain. This test may be ordered if there is a history of stroke, mini stroke, dizziness or if an extra sound is heard when the doctor listens to your neck.
This non-invasive test does not use needles, drugs or dyes. The test will be performed by a highly skilled ultrasound technologist. Necklaces will be removed prior to the study. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin over the area to be studied. A handheld transducer is used to make the pictures. The pictures will show the walls of the arteries, the blood flow through the arteries and any plaque formation in the arteries.
The velocity of the blood flow will be measured. This will pinpoint the level and severity of disease, if any. The doctor may order additional testing if this study is abnormal.
